I just got back from the vet, and other than the visit not being free, it went as well as it possibly could have gone.
Gracie - has a fatty deposit caused by the subcutaneous stitches she had when she was spayed. It doesn't have to be removed, she's fine.
Bernie - had an ear infection, so his ears were cleaned and he has medicine to take once a day. His leg is most likely being bothered by arthritis, and I can give him some glucosamine pills to help with it, if I want - they can be purchased through them (too expensive) or over the counter in the grocery store (which I'll check out).
I feel like a million pounds of weight has just been taken off my shoulders. Woo! Now I'll be able to start vacation next week and actually ENJOY it! Excellent. :) Maybe July won't totally suck after all.

Wooooooooooooooo! That is fan-frigging-tastic!!! TIMES TWO!
Haskell is on Glyco Flex. It is expensive when you first start out, but isn't that bad after you reach the maintenance phase (after something like six weeks). After that it is only about $80-$90 every nine months or so. Or at least it is for Haskell. Bernie might weigh more (Haskell is approximately 65 pounds).
Anyway, I’d definitely recommend the Glyco Flex. I tried other brands and combinations when money was EXTREMELY tight just before and after Haskell’s shoulder surgery, but he responded the best to Glyco Flex. I’ve heard the same thing from other friends who have used it on their pets. Dolly, my sister’s 14 year old shepherd mix, is also on it, and it has made a world of difference in how much her arthritis affects her mobility and day-to-day existence (she is, after all, considered to be a “geriatric” at her age). And the sooner you get Bernie on it, the better (it also slows down joint damage and deterioration).
Wow…I totally sound like an advertisement. I am just really impressed with how well it works. A friend of mine had an older golden retriever with really bad hip dysplasia. At one point he could barely get himself up without assistance, and walking looked painful. Her vet put Montana on Glyco Flex, and after a couple of weeks Montana was running and swimming like he was a puppy again. It was seriously amazing. It honestly gave Montana two relatively pain free years before he finally passed away last summer (he was old for a big dog).
Anyway, if there is a way for you to afford it for Bernie, I’d definitely give it a go. I know it sucks because it isn’t cheap (especially at first), but after you reach the maintenance phase it’s really only $8 or $9 a month.
