I accumulate a small pile of food on my desk at work every week. This morning the pile looks like this, with some of the stuff left over from last week, and some new today. I'm making a conscious effort to eat better (hence the apples and low fat fruit bar), but I still can't quite get away from my junk food addiction (hence the 3 Musketeers and Doritos).
I've had issues with food ever since I was a teenager. I've always loved junk food, and have gone back and forth on how much of it I've eaten, and how I've balanced it with healthy food. When I was still in school and living with my parents, I'd have a mostly healthy mix, if only because I ate regular meals for dinner and was outside hanging out with my friends so much that I didn't snack much at all. That mostly healthy mix stopped when I got on my own (and the healthy weight went away as a consequence - funny, huh?).
Now, at the ripe old age of 38, I'm facing the fact that I need to get my eating under control. I need to reintroduce the healthy food and limit the junk. So I've started bringing apples to work. Last week I managed to eat one apple per day on the days I was at work. This week I'm shooting for two per day (they're small apples, so that should be easy - they're also super yummy). The apples are actually the easy thing, though. The hard thing is cutting out the chocolate. I am COMPLETELY addicted to chocolate, and I'm not afraid to admit it. I'm hoping I can stick to small amounts of chocolate, and still be satisfied. We'll see how that works.
Anyway, I have 3 months or so before I have to go back to the doctor to have my blood work done, and I'm hoping to have that cholesterol number back down to normal. So I'm looking at what I eat every day, and I'm eating apples (the number one suggestion of my doctor), and I'm working on cutting down on my junk food intake. It's hard - the hardest thing I've ever done, I think, since I fought my fears and let J into my life and heart last year. That worked out amazingly well, so maybe the food thing will too? Maybe? I'll let you know.
(And in the meantime, I'm shaming myself by showing you my pile of food. At least it's not all chocolate and chips, right? I mean, look! There are pretzels in there! Right on top of the Doritos! :) And the apples are right in front, easy to grab, so I'll definitely eat those first, right? Right? Yeah. Excuse me, it's mid-morning snack time. I have to go grab an apple (3 Musketeers?).)
p.s. Miss you, J. Is it Friday yet?

Trevor is having cholesterol issues as well, so we've been eating a lot of fiber in an attempt to get his numbers back down to normal. So far, his favorite is whole wheat pasta with shelled edamame and a tomato garlic sauce that I make from scratch. It's pretty good, which is surprising because I can't cook.
Also, I’m considering applying for a program at SU that is only 13 months long. It would suck because I would have to relocate (something I’m not sure I want to do – especially since Trevor wouldn’t be relocating with me), albeit temporarily. Anyway, if I do decide to apply (and if I get in and make the move) would you hang out with me? I don’t know anyone up there anymore, and that is intimidating. I swear: I’m not a stalker and I believe myself to be quasi-normal. How’s that for a self description?
I must say, though, I do miss the food in Syracuse. Weird, huh? Especially Aladdin’s and Alto Cinco. Yum. Things I DON’T miss about Syracuse: the weather. Dude – frost?! It’s supposed to be 80 some-odd degrees in Dallas today!! :P
Hi Deals!
I hope Trevor gets his numbers down - my doctor said the fiber thing too, which is why I'm eating the apples. I need to start eating a higher fiber cereal, too, though. Another thing to work on. And I like the idea of the pasta - that sounds good!
And of course I would hang out with you! I'm actually about an hour's drive from Syracuse, but we could still get together anyway. :) And I believe that you're not a stalker. It's sad that Trevor wouldn't be here with you, though. And what about your dogs? Well, if you can't bring them with you, you can at least visit ours. Even though that's not the same.
But yeah, you'll have to get used to the weather again. You're not going to see 80 degree November days here! :)
So didya have the apple or the 3 musketeers? Suspense sucks.
And if deals comes to Syracuse, I want to come on an outing, too! Please? I'm nice. Not stalker-ish in the least. I swear.
