My hair hadn't been cut in over a year, and it had gotten so long that I couldn't stand it anymore. It was at the middle of my back, and although I have a lot of hair, the individual strands are all thin, so it tangles really easily when it gets that long. Still, I was doing fine with it, until I started noticing split ends. I hate those. And then it has just been on my nerves the last couple of days, so I stopped at a place in town on the way home to see if they could fit me in, and they were able to. Yay! My hair is now about four inches shorter, and it feels much better.
The real treat, though, was listening to the "salon talk." There were two stylists in there - a quiet one, who thankfully was the one who did my hair, and another one, who talked really loudly to her client the whole time I was in there. Their topic of discussion? Their ill-behaved step-children, and the horrible mothers who made them that way.
Seriously, do you need to be talking about that stuff at full voice in a salon where other people are getting their hair done? In the half an hour or so that I was in there, I heard that the client's child's mother was a whore, who was probably doing the judge who gave her primary custody back after she had lost it temporarily, that she was a lush who drank too much, that she chose to sleep until Noon and go to work in the evenings cutting hair instead of being home with her son, and that her son had seen lots of men go in and out of his Mom's life, so he had no idea what marriage or fidelity meant. And then the hair stylist chimed in with how horrible her step-son's mother is, and how the kid had bruises on his arms that had to be from someone grabbing him, and they took pictures and took them to a lawyer, but the courts ruled that there wasn't any sign of abuse, and his mom was letting the kids take care of themselves all the time, and on and on.
I couldn't help but laugh to myself. But I'm really glad I'm not one of those women who have to tell all their family secrets at a hair salon. And I'm REALLY glad that I had a stylist who didn't feel inclined to try to get me to.
