Skin Deep

I just got to thinking about something. How much of a person do we see when we look at them? Our society is so hung up on appearances that we've been almost programmed to look at someone's surface and take it to be their true identity; the beautiful people, the geeks, the ugly people and every other group you could name. But when we look at someone and label them based on their appearance, how much of their inner self are we missing?

When we (and I do include myself in this group) look at people, we don't usually see anything other than that surface appearance. But when we take the time, either voluntarily or because we're forced to by circumstances such as work or school, we find really incredible people inside. So why don't we take the time more often? After all, some of the best, most interesting personalities are hidden behind plain facades. Sometimes the character of a person is much greater than the exterior that nature gave them.

This thought was sparked while I was watching an episode of Smallville, of all things. Still, it's a good thought. You don't have to be beautiful to be interesting; scratch the surface of an average or below average looking person, and you just might find someone worth knowing. (Then again, you might just find an average asshole. But that's the gamble of life, isn't it?)
